Continual Personal Development (CPD)
At Fill-ins we want to help all our dental nurses fulfil their Continual Personal Development (CPD) requirements. We are now running series of courses which contribute to the 50 hours of verifiable CPD. Please contact us for details of our latest courses.
What are your CPD requirements?
All registered dental nurses now need to demonstrate 150 hours of CPD over a 5 year period. Of these 150 hours, 50 hours must be verifiable.
The General Dental Council (GDC) defines continuing professional development as:
"Study, training courses, seminars, reading and other activities undertaken by a dental professional, which could be expected to advance his or her development as a dental professional."
In order to maintain your place on the Dental Care Professional (DCP) register CPD is a compulsory requirement.
What types of CPD are there?
Continual Personal Development is classified into two types: verifiable and non-verifiable.
Verifiable CPD this requires documentation to prove completion/participation. Some examples include:
- Attending conferences
- Completing courses/training
- Completing online CPD tests
Non-verifiable CPD encompasses activities that benefit lifelong learning. Some examples include:
- Reading books
- Reading journals
- Private study
- Distance learning
Core Topics have been set by The General Dental Council. These are:
- Medical emergencies (at least 10 verifiable hours on this topic over the 5-year period)
- Disinfection and decontamination (at least 5 verifiable hours over 5 years)
- Radiography / radiation protection (at least 5 verifiable hours over 5 years)
When choosing which CPD to undertake always ask yourself this question:
"Does this activity contribute towards my continuing professional development as a dental professional?"
